H-GAC is made up of 13 county governments, 107 cities, and 11 school districts. H-GAC is seeking a Principal Planner to join the Sustainable Development team within our Community & Environmental Department. The Principal Planner is responsible for major elements of H-GAC initiatives that improve coordination of land use and transportation planning and promote best practices for community planning and development.
The individual will be responsible for the execution of large scale plans for assigned programs, projects or initiatives including Livable Centers studies. As one of their primary roles, the Principal Planner will build relationships with the 24 regional partners that have already completed a Livable Centers study to conceive and execute strategies to implement the recommendations in each study. A successful candidate will have the ability to create actionable steps that bring the Livable Centers studies to life. This will include bringing local partners toward a solution and navigating funding and implementation strategies that improve connectivity and quality of life. A working knowledge of public-private partnerships is preferred.
In addition to guiding Livable Centers implementation across the region, the Principal Planner will help develop resource materials around cutting-edge and critical planning topics for local governments in the region. The individual will also conceptualize, organize, and conduct training sessions to promote awareness and use of best practices for local governments. Job duties also include collecting and analyzing data, evaluating the success of plans and offering alternatives, researching applicable policies, and seeking additional funding opportunities. The ideal candidate will feel comfortable working with third party vendors and stakeholders to gain buy-in and support. A background in budget management, project reporting, and performance evaluation is important.
The successful candidate will have at a minimum:
Bachelor’s degree in Urban, Community/Regional Planning or a related field of study.
Applicable experience may substitute for education.
Five (5) years’ experience in leading large-scale projects, programs or initiatives.
Preferred qualifications include:
Master’s degree in in Urban, Community/Regional Planning or a related field of study.
Eight (8) years’ experience in leading large-scale projects, programs or initiatives.
