The North Central Texas Council of Governments Transportation Department is seeking an entry- or mid-level Transportation Planner in the Sustainable Development program, which undertakes projects region-wide related to the interface between land use and transportation, planning for bicycle and pedestrian modes of transportation, transit-oriented development, and community school siting.
This position is an exciting opportunity to see integrated transportation and land-use planning move from theory to policy to implementation at a regional scale. Some of the specific project areas that the successful candidate may anticipate assisting with include: managing awarded contracts for projects that emphasize mixed-use development, transit-oriented development, and bicycle/pedestrian access; managing projects that advance unique environmental and transportation solutions; managing projects addressing inventive regional parking solutions; developing green infrastructure training opportunities; developing multimodal roadway corridor plans using context-sensitive design principles; developing downtown vision plans; developing project funding criteria and performance measures; and more. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Developing, coordinating, and reviewing sustainable development planning projects, including land use, demographics, market, and multimodal transportation access
- Developing, coordinating, and reviewing awarded sustainable development infrastructure project documents, including invoices, reports, contracts, scopes of work, and project schedules
- Assisting with the management of consultant contracts
- Assisting with the development of work scopes and agreements
- Supporting coordination activities with city governments, transit agencies, developers, civic associations, consultants, stakeholders, and the public on transportation projects
- Preparing correspondence, reports, and other documents
- Preparing and delivering oral presentations
- Using ArcGIS and visualization tools to develop detailed maps, graphics, and spatial analysis
- Completing various transportation-related assignments, including inquiries and data collection
- Writing grant applications and reporting on activities
- Strong verbal, public speaking, and written communication skills
- Strong critical thinking, problem solving, and analytical skills
- Must be detail-oriented and highly organized, with ability to multi-task to shift focus quickly among projects
- Ability to complete tasks effectively for a wide variety of project types
- Good interpersonal skills
- Ability to gather and analyze data from multiple sources such as Census data, Appraisal District Parcel data, land-use and zoning data, etc.
- Knowledge and understanding of planning and urban design principles, development processes, and real estate principles that are related to sustainable development and context-sensitive planning methods
- Ability to work in a team environment
- Understanding of interrelationships between transportation and land-use planning decisions
- Experience using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to develop layers, shapefiles, and maps
- Experience working on multiple projects and balancing multiple priorities
- Experience working with the public and elected officials desired
- Experience with Adobe Creative Suite 6 design software (Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop) a plus
- Bachelor’s degree in analytical, quantitative methods (i.e., urban, community, or transportation planning, or a related field such as public administration, economic development, urban design, landscape architecture, etc.)
- At least one year of work-related experience
Minimum of $48,278.00 annually
