The North Central Texas Council of Governments is seeking an entry- or mid-level Transportation Planner to support the Sustainable Development program, specifically related to Bicycle and Pedestrian Coordination. This position offers an exciting opportunity for candidates to participate in a wide range of activities with stakeholders in the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area related to bicycle/pedestrian planning and studies, multi-modal corridor studies, safety education and outreach, development of a regional pedestrian safety action plan, coordinating quarterly meetings with the regional Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee (BPAC), coordinating stakeholder meetings and preparing meeting summaries, data collection including the bicycle and pedestrian count program, using ArcGIS and Publisher to create detailed maps for various planning projects, geodatabase file maintenance of regional trails and bikeways, and using ArcGIS for spatial analysis and spatial data editing.
The active transportation network in the Dallas-Fort Worth region consists of more than 7,300 miles of existing and planned regional shared-use paths (Regional Veloweb), supporting community shared-use paths and on-street bikeways in various stages of development. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Assisting with the development, coordination, and review of plans and improvement projects, including roadway, intersection, pedestrian/bicycle, and other capital projects
- Coordinating with partner agencies, civic associations, and consultants on active transportation projects
- Drafting correspondence, documentation, reports, articles and executive summaries
- Drafting, preparing and delivering oral presentations
- Assisting with the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee and other project committee meetings (e.g., identifying speakers, topics and outreach opportunities, and creating announcements)
- Assisting with the creation and maintenance of databases
- Conducting investigations and data collection
- Planning, organizing, and promoting public education programs and materials related to the safety and accessibility of pedestrian and bicycle facilities
- Providing assistance in the management of consultant contracts
- Creating detailed project maps
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Strong critical-thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills
- Detail oriented, highly organized, and ability to multi-task
- Good interpersonal skills
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment
- Understanding of and the ability to utilize Census data and American Community Survey (ACS) data for analysis
- Experience using Geographic Information Systems (ArcGIS)
- Experience working with the public desired
- Experience with Adobe Creative Suite design software (Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop) a plus
- Work requires a Bachelor’s degree in an analytical, quantitative methods field such as urban/transportation planning, landscape architecture, etc.
- One year of job-related experience or less
