Project Summary

The VISTA will serve as a conduit for students throughout Far West Texas who are in need of career guidance and workforce information. The position will be based in Alpine, Texas. VISTA will also assist with identifying economic needs of the community.


Project Description 

This VISTA will build capacity in Fare West Texas to alleviate poverty, reduce unemployment, and provide a better quality of life.  The VISTA’s focus is to serve as a conduit for students who are in need of career guidance and workforce information. The VISTA will help students identify career & technical education options, GED options, alternative schools, and post-secondary education as appropriate to their needs and aspirations. The VISTA will also collaborate with ISDs to share high growth high demand occupations and labor market information to provide feedback to the educators on curriculum offerings and development. The Economic Development Administration is the VISTA Sponsor and the VISTA will work at the Rio Grande Council of Governments. The priority of the objectives and activities included in this VAD may vary depending on the community needs.


This project is sponsored by the Austin Regional Office (AURO) of the Economic Development Administration (EDA), and will be directly supervised by the West Texas EDD in Alpine. The overall EDA Mission is “to lead the federal economic development agenda by promoting innovation and competitiveness, preparing American regions for growth and success in the worldwide economy.” 


Member Duties 

VISTA will work directly with Workforce Solutions Borderplex and eleven school districts to promote the Texas Workforce Commission’s Workforce Career and Education Program. The VISTA will make presentations to students, parents and ISD staff about career and post-secondary pathways. VISTA will also coordinate quarterly conference calls with the school districts, WSB, and WTEDD, to discuss emerging issues. The focus on this initiative is in line with the WTEDD’s Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy.



Skills- Community development, public speaking, communications

Minimum Education Level- High School, some college

Additional Languages- None required
