Serving more than 7 million people in our region, the Houston-Galveston Area Council is the cornerstone to address issues that cross city limits and county lines every day.  H-GAC is made up of 13 county governments, 107 cities, and 11 school districts. H-GAC seeks a Planner to join the Sustainable Development team within our Community and Environmental Department. Through cooperation with local governments, H-GAC’s Community and Environmental Planning Department works to improve the quality of life for residents across the region.  The H-GAC Livable Centers Program encourages the development of safe and attractive places for people to live, work, stay and play through innovative planning studies.  Studies provide a framework to promote efficient use of existing infrastructure, create multi-modal travel choices by foot, bike or bus, improve accessibility and circulation for all travel system, leverage private resources for strategic investment and create quality space through the community.   Recognizing the Houston-Galveston area’s diversity, this program is innovative and seeks to attract talent that can bring new ideas to the table, foster positive relationships with region partners and manage a series of top-notch consulting firms from around the country.

As the Planner, you will find motivation working with diverse communities from rural townships to dense urban populations.  As a project manager, your major job duties will include managing planning consultant teams and H-GAC clients, project timelines and final deliverables.  You must be proficient in collecting and analyzing data, researching best practices and demonstrate an interest finding and securing new funding opportunities based on Program interest.  Strong project management, communication, and presentation skills are crucial for success in this role.  You must be able to provide professional and timely feedback to a variety of audiences.   The ideal candidate will provide design procedures and develop regional plans for a range of sustainable development programs. As a team player, the ideal candidate will assist and lead in the preparation and execution of various committee meetings and training workshops.

The successful candidate will have at a minimum:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning, Regional Planning, or related field
  • Three (3) years’ experience in urban or regional planning, community development or related field.
  • Thorough knowledge of pertinent policies, regulations and best management practices.
  • Ability to plan and effectively manage complex, long-term projects
  • Ability to work in a team environment, with strong multi-tasking skills and able to work on more than one project at a time, meeting tight deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform under high-pressure with schedule constraints.
  • Ability to be flexible and willing to improve writing and analysis approaches.

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Five (5) years’ experience in urban and regional planning, monitoring and reporting.
  • Experience with GIS and/or graphics software including Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop) and SketchUp
