About Houston-Galveston Area Council

The Houston-Galveston Area Council is one of the largest regional planning commissions in the country with a diverse service area of 13 counties and more than 7 million people. We are the pulse of our region addressing issues that cross city limits and county lines every single day.   

We make decisions that affect our transportation system, ensure the safety and well-being or our seniors, connect people to jobs, help families recover from natural disasters, preserve water quality for our children, and so much more. What will I be doing?  

Social Media

  • Develops the agency’s annual social media strategy by setting goals and measurable objectives
  • Develops a weekly social media content calendar
  • Manages the agency’s multiple social media platforms
  • Develops engaging content for various social media platforms
  • Creates graphics using Canva and videos using Promo for social media following agency branding guidelines
  • Personalizes the agency’s social media by identifying ways to feature people and their stories
  • Utilizes communication tools and technology to streamline social media postings, evaluating analytics, and improving engagement
  • Maintains monthly social media analytics; evaluates the effectiveness of social media platforms and tactics; improves tactics based on findings; and, provides report at monthly team meetings


  • Using Constant Contact, design, prepare, and distribute email marketing content and surveys for departments and the agency using agency branding guidelines
  • Write e-marketing content for e-blasts and surveys
  • Serve as the agency’s gatekeeper of Constant Contact
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date email lists in Constant Contact, adding and deleting on a regular basis
  • Write content, develop, and distribute the agency’s monthly internal newsletter
  • Grow the agency’s newsletter contact database

Digital Advertising

  • Coordinates the agency’s paid social media advertising campaigns and purchases following agency processes, protocols, and budgets
  • Coordinates the agency’s paid digital advertising campaigns and purchases following agency processes, protocols, and budgets
  • Reports advertising performance metrics to project manager

Campaign Coordination

  • Work closely with the project manager to coordinate various communications and outreach campaigns using the four-step public relations process (research, planning, implementation, and evaluation)
  • Develop campaign timelines, benchmarks, and measurable outcomes
  • Prepare campaign reports that highlight analytics, outlines measurable outcomes, and identifies ways to improve campaign tactics

Key Qualifications

  • Effective interpersonal skills with the desire to work with a diverse group of internal and external partners
  • Enjoy providing support to agency departments and helping others with their communication requests with a customer service attitude
  • Demonstrate the ability to collaborate with team members and other agency staff to complete timelines and projects
  • Comfortable with being flexible and adaptable in a fast-paced environment and adhering to fast and impromptu deadlines
  • Ability to work on multiple projects with varying deadlines while producing high-quality work and exercising extreme attention to detail
  • Demonstrate writing experience for e-marketing and e-blasts, social media, newsletters, digital advertising, and website copy
  • Comfortable receiving direction, then executing individual projects independently, taking initiative, and making sound decisions
  • Comfortable working on high-profile projects that impact our region, the public, elected officials, and important stakeholders

Do you have…  

  • Bachelor degree in communications, public relations, marketing or related field of study
  • 3 years of experience with local government, nonprofit programs, schoold or in job related duties
