Initially, the VISTA will be assisting EDA and the Sub-Site EDDs with recruitment efforts and primary orientation and training programs. During that time, the VISTA will also attend training on economic development principles and will be researching economic development resources in order to better understand the support required by VISTA Members. Throughout their service, the VISTA Leader will support the other VISTA Members through ongoing training, tracking development and site activities, and facilitating idea sharing and coordination of member and service site programs. Finally, the VISTA Leader will build-out and track metrics which measure the economic impact the program is having in the region.
The U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA) VISTA project seeks to increase capacity in economically distressed rural communities to alleviate poverty, reduce unemployment, and provide a better quality of life. In its second pilot year, this project is expanding to cover five states in the Southwest region and the selected VISTA Leader will be instrumental in building out a program and supporting an engaged team of VISTA Members. The VISTA Leader will be located in Austin, Texas. They will spend time working with the EDA project sponsor, their immediate supervisor, and their regional VISTA peers to expand and build the capacity of the individual VISTA members and their respective service sites. The VISTA Leader will serve as a resource on the VISTA program and for economic development principles (emphasized early in their training) for the VISTA team. It is expected that the VISTA Leader will develop a strong VISTA recruitment and retention program, strengthen the training and development of EDA VISTA Members, and track the impact of the VISTAs throughout the region; and in addition, will work to add value to the broader EDA district partner network. The overall EDA Mission is “to lead the federal economic development agenda by promoting innovation and competitiveness, preparing American regions for growth and success in the worldwide economy.” Consideration for this position will be on a rolling basis as applications are received.
